THE RACE, Ilulissat 2018

The use of the Greenland sled dog is going through rapid changes in the recent years. Dog sled racing is increasing in popularity and is receiving immense attention from the Greenland media. In 2018 the annual national championship was held in Ilulissat, West Greenland, where 30 participants with each 10 dogs was competing for the title as the best musher in Greenland. Although there’s money prices involved in the competition, there’s no doubt that the honor and prestige of keeping the long tradition of dog sledding alive is a much higher motivation for the mushers. The image was shot in march from a high mountain just after the start of the race and 25 of the 30 competitors are framed in the picture.
